FRAME MAGAZINE BEE TOTEMS

31 January 2019

PUBLISHED IN FRAME MAGAZINE

This February (No.126, 2019), FRAME Magazine featured my insect totems — design pieces that balance aesthetics with ecological impact. These vibrant, powder-coated steel sculptures stand tall like temples, offering both visual beauty and essential shelter for solitary bees.

AESTHETIC AND DURABLE

By filling the cylinders with cane and natural materials, the totems provide safe habitats for pollinators — our small but mighty heroes who keep our food chain alive. Their presence turns balconies, gardens, and urban corners into sanctuaries where design meets ecology. Durable in material, symbolic in form, they are monuments to the insects we depend on most.

DUTCH DESIGN WEEK & RECOGNITION

Originally unveiled during Dutch Design Week 2018, where they were highlighted by Sight Unseen’s “Best of DDW18”, the totems translate human architecture into vertical settlements for pollinators.

MYTHOLOGICAL INSPIRATION

Inspired by ancient myths such as Aristaeus, the Greek figure linked to beekeeping, these works merge mythology with contemporary sustainable design. The result: objects that carry both a narrative and a function.
