A sculptural floor lamp exploring the translucent qualities of wood veneer. What initially appears to be a solid wooden column transforms when illuminated, revealing a hidden rhythm of circular openings beneath the surface. Light, shadow and natural wood grain merge into one warm and atmospheric object.

MONO grew from a fascination with the unexpected transparency of wood veneer. Rather than treating veneer purely as a decorative surface, the design explores how its thin structure can filter and soften light. The first prototypes emerged through material experiments during the VAK YOU UP trajectory at Vaktor Makershuis, where translucency became the starting point for a new series of studies within the studio practice.

When switched off, MONO reads as a minimal wooden volume. Once illuminated, circular shapes hidden behind the veneer become visible, changing the appearance of the object completely. The veneer softens the light while allowing its grain to remain present, creating depth and a subtle transition between solid material and transparency.
The lamp draws inspiration from Midcentury design, the warm interiors of the 1970s and the atmospheric quality of sunlight filtering through a forest. These references are translated into a contemporary and graphic object: a strong architectural silhouette that reveals a softer and more unexpected character through light.
MONO forms part of MATERIAL OBSESSIONS, an ongoing body of work within NICK BEENS STUDIO in which material and production techniques become the starting point for new objects. Rather than applying material after a form has been designed, the studio explores how cutting, joining, finishing and manipulating a material can actively determine an object’s form, character and experience.
At 120 cm tall, MONO sits between functional floor lamp and sculptural interior object. Its narrow footprint gives it a strong vertical presence without dominating the space. During the day, the natural veneer and minimal geometry define the object. In the evening, the illuminated pattern changes its character and introduces a warm layer of light into the room.
